How to Overcome Phone Fear, in this post I'm addressing this very real problem and how to overcome fear of the phone and rejection.

Fear of the phone is a real thing and everyone who must make business calls faces it. You are not alone. Many have gone before you and many have learnt how to conquer this excruciating, stressful problem.

When I was first hired as a Sales Representative for a large multinational company my job was to call up professionals. They were mostly, Architects and Engineers. Every morning on the way to work I would be dreading having to hit the phone.

I habitually procrastinated, did useless busy work, all of which made my agony even more intense because this was my job and I had a sales budget to meet or I would be fired for sure. My family depended on me and I hated that I was letting them down.

Eventually I would put on my big boy pants, bite the bullet and make the calls.

Funny thing was, the more calls I made, the better I got at it. I developed a style that worked for me.

That was my first year and I won some amazingly huge contracts. So large in fact that I smashed my budget. The CEO flew me down to the head office for drinks in the board room. He told me I had made the most sales in the world (for that company).

Pretty good for a guy with chronic phone fear.


How does one overcome fear of the phone?


Well there are a number of steps which we will cover. The good news is that in Network Marketing it’s easier to overcome phone fear than it is in the corporate world. No one in the corporate world has a vested interest in your success, no one is going to give you a script, no one is going to teach you how to make calls, no one will care if you fail.

In Network Marketing, you have an upline who do want you to succeed, remember that and reach out to them for help. It’s part of their role and responsibility to give you mentoring.

Now, on with the tips to help you overcome phone fear. These tips are not in any particular order.


Tip Number One for Overcoming Fear of the Phone in Network Marketing.

As I already mentioned; actually picking up the phone and doing it eventually lessens the fear. It becomes less and less over time. It might take 5 days or 15 days or even 30 days but if you persevere and make at least 5 calls per day it will subside in its intensity.

It’s not going to go away 100% for most people but just making 5 calls on a regular basis will reduce your anxiety to a manageable level.

It’s also going to make you feel good about yourself and much more confident.


Tip Number Two for Overcoming Fear of the Phone in Network Marketing.

Get some help from your upline. There is absolutely no need to be afraid to reach out to your upline and ask for help and training. This is their job. They want you to be successful as much as you do.

Your upline is always looking for the downline who put up their hand and ask for help. That shows them you are serious about success and that you deserve their attention.

Your upline has the experience and the runs on the board, don’t deny yourself.

Get with them, always have a note book and pen. Take copious notes because you will retain the information much better and it shows respect.

Sit in with them while they make calls. Listen carefully, record it if they allow it and use the same script they use. Because they have made tons of calls they most likely do not have the script written down. They know it off by heart. You should have your script written down until you don’t need it anymore.

The most common problem I encounter when new MLM’ers come on chat and tell me leads don’t work is they themselves are not experienced and are not using a script of any kind.

Leads do work, it’s the new networker who is the cause of the problem.

This leads me to mention that feedback on your method, script, the manner in which you deliver it is a good thing. Feedback form people who have walked the walk is a good thing. It’s not intended to hurt your feelings. It’s intended to identify your weak spots and help you improve.

Please do not be thin skinned and cry when given feedback. Take it onboard and use the feedback to be better.

If you can’t get with your upline because of distance, record your calls and send some for your uplines’ analysis and feedback.

How to Overcome Phone Fear

By the way, when I am saying your upline, it does not necessarily mean the person who sponsored you. You might need to go further up until you find an upline who is actively building the business and having good success. Search and you will find.

Study

When you get a script from your upline and training and feedback; study it, internalize it.

Make a hundred calls with the new script and implement the feedback you were given. Every single call you make will incrementally make you better. You will become a master of the script and even begin to modify it on the fly to best suit the situation.

Now you are becoming a ninja at this.

If you make 100 calls and no one is interested and won’t take your material, won’t watch your video; then guess what; you’re still doing it wrong. Those people ARE interested in more money and more time, they are just not interested in you or what you are saying.

I know that’s harsh but I find people who say they have a good script and have had feedback from a mentor and still can’t get good results are lying to themselves. They have NOT implemented what was told to them at all and would rather blame the prospects than admit, they are not being teachable.

No one is born knowing how to be a doctor or a pilot or a rocket scientist or a network marketer. We all must learn these skills. No one cares if you were working as a sales rep. That may give you some skill but it’s not translatable.

Being teachable, sucking up the knowledge and implementing it are key to being a success in this industry. If you want to insist on doing it your way, then good luck with that.

Study what you are doing and saying during calls. Set up a cam to record yourself. I promise it will be very revealing. You will see, maybe, that you are umming and ahhing a lot of the time. It maybe that you see yourself stumbling over words, being a bit of a waffler and going off the script.

Once you see these things you can improve them.

Listen, everyone who makes phone calls for a living is faced with objections. No one escapes. It’s human nature to object when we first hear a new thing. It’s really a way people are asking for more information.

It’s also a fantastic opportunity for you to see where they are at and lay their mind at ease. You must answer objections in a professional manner and never lie or exaggerate. By the way, your product is not the greatest thing in the world and everyone is going to want it. You know that and so does your prospect, so don’t say such over the top rubbish.

Some of the things you are going to hear will be; “is this a scam?”, “is this one of the pyramid things?”

You need to know how to deal with that in a professional manner which does not involve lying. There are plenty of books on Amazon which you can grab for less than a coffee. I love the amazing lessons given by Kim Klaver. If you can get hold of an amazing book she wrote called “Rules for the New New MLM’er” get it! She also does podcasts. Brilliant networker.

Remember, objections are part of the process and learning how to overcome them is a skill which will serve you very well indeed.

Use a Script

Truly the number of people who I chat with that are not using a good proven script is beyond belief.

If you are not using a good proven script you must be just saying whatever comes into your brain. That’s not measurable so you cannot improve. You can only stay at the level you’re at right now.

A good, proven script keeps you on track and produces results which is why EVERY successful Networker uses a script.

PLUS, by using a script your downline can duplicate your success much more easily, because you can give them a copy of yours and then they can do the same. Everything you do in MLM will be duplicated, that covers both good and bad things. Best for everyone if you do the good things.

Duplication


In MLM when anyone refers to duplication, which you will hear quite a lot, it means that knowledge and skills can be transferred to someone else. For example person A can pass onto person B a great script and person B can pass it onto person C.


You can only do that if you are using a good proven script yourself.


Also as part of this tip, it’s super important that you get with new people very quickly and give them training in prospecting, calling leads, handling objections, etc. This will give them some armor plating against the negativity that some people are going to dump on them.


Don’t be using the old thing about make a list of your friends and family, that does not work, all it does is make new people quit. Friends and family are the ones who will dump the most negativity on your new recruits, don’t put them through that if you want to keep them.

Affirmations


Yes, affirmations, it sounds a bit mumbo jumbo but I became convinced when I heard Scott Adams (the Dilbert Cartoonist) speak about the huge effect they had on his life. It was on a Tim Ferris podcast.


Writing down a phrase about what you want and reading it out loud to yourself seems to have a magical effect on your life.


A good time to read them out might be just before you begin your daily calls.


Overall, be confident, be wise and never be begging.

ALL of these goals will work fine with SMS Texting.  But do remember that each individual campaign should only focus on one goal. 

It should be a clear and compelling instruction so your prospects are not confused about what you want them to do.

All you goals should be:  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Otherwise how will you ever know if you’re actually meeting your goals.


2. You Need Permission To Send SMS Messages

If you purchase leads from disreputable lead companies, the leads may be cheaper.  But, and this is important, they may not have opted into the lead list. Often bad lead companies have spam lists.

This will only lead you into trouble, expensive trouble.

If you are not sure, then you need to get permission

An easy way to do this is to have people text a simple keyword to your texting number. Make sure to tell them what they’re signing up for and how frequently you’ll be texting.

 

3. Don’t Be Annoying

The most annoying thing you could do to your list is text them multiple times per day.

Big mistake!

All you will do is piss people off and generate a big bunch of complaints.

Keep it to once a week at the most.  

Don’t send the same message multiple times.  Always come up with a fresh, new, interesting and compelling message

In your first message, remind your list they signed up for your information and tell them how frequently you’ll be texting. 

You should also include instructions on how to unsubscribe from your list.


4. Timing is Everything

You want to run great campaigns which hit your goals by generating engagement with your prospects.

Treat them nicely.

Think about who your list is and send messages at an appropriate time.  For example if they are mostly working people with regular jobs, don’t be sending messages late at night.

During the day is going to work much better.

Engagement is the aim, you want them to take action like watch your video or go to your site etc.  Not many are going to do that late at night or before breakfast.


5. A Sense Of Urgency

Everyone is busy these days and that’s not going to change.  Getting people’s attention and to take action is hard.  

We all have interruptions going on all day long.  We all are overloaded with incoming advertising messages, social media, emails.

It’s your job as a marketer to present a compelling, urgent message which will get your prospects to take the desired action, right now!

How you can get this sense of urgency going is to use some statements like this:

Offer Closes at Midnight

Sale Ends Thursday at Noon

First 100 Signups Only

Free (thing) For The First 50 People

You get the idea. 

Take Action Now To Avoid Disappointment

Click Now

Don’t be a bullshitter, if you say it, make sure it’s true!

Be sure to include a link to your landing page or website in your message. 

Always include who you are so you build recognition and trust

By creating urgency so that people take immediate action, you will increase your conversion rate.


6. Keep It Friendly and Fun

Don’t sound like a robot.  

Be personal and informal. 

If it’s appropriate, inject some fun and humor. Don’t do that if you’re a funeral home. 

Be entertaining.  If your list becomes used to your style and find it fun, they will open and act on your messages.  That’s what you want, right?

You could feature quizzes, games, and polls.

You want to capture people’s attention by making it feel personal and informal


7. Test, Test, Test Your Messages

I’ve had some customers complain to me that they sent out 100,000 messages and got very little responses.

When I asked them how many messages they tested, the answer is always none.

Can you imagine a bigger mistake?

Here is the right way to do it

Take a small sample of say 500 leads. 

Write the best message you can think of.  The first one you think of is very rarely the best.  Write down 10 messages. Get some feedback and choose the best one.

Send it to the 500 and record the results.  The stats you want are what time you sent it.  What the message was. How many people you sent it to.  How many responded. How many desired results you got (sales, signups, views, recruits etc)

Then change the message slightly.  Only make one change in each test.  

Then rinse and repeat.

Do this 5 to 10 times until you have a message that is producing a positive ROI (return on investment)

When you have that, increase the number or people you are going to send the message to.

Now you should be really rocking it!

What’s the ROI on lead scoring?

Lead scoring has gained a lot of attention among marketing executives and professional marketers. What’s the big deal about scoring leads? Is it really possible to see double digit improvements in business metrics by doing it? If so, where do you start?

What is Lead Scoring?

Lead scoring is the process of ranking leads based on their quality and likelihood of conversion, and how sales ready they are.

Various points based systems may be used to give merit to a lead based on a variety of factors. Though the easiest and simplest way to score leads is using a lettered system.

For example:

A leads: The best, and most ready to close

B leads: Qualified leads that still need some nurturing

C: leads: Qualified leads, but not urgent or likely to make an immediate decision

D: Leads: May not be qualified or a good fit for you

Why Do it?

As far back as 2012 CMOs were reporting as much as 138% increases in ROI when using lead scoring, according to the Marketing Sherpa blog and Benchmark Report.

Back then only around 21% of B2B companies were doing it. Know that many more marketers and organizations are recommending and practicing it, there may be more pressure to apply lead scoring in order to remain competitive and profitable.

If triple digit ROI sounds too good to be true, Kentico says businesses can see 38% better conversions. Business 2 Community says it increases lead generation ROI by 77%. However, to really understand the potential, businesses need to get how broad and deep lead scoring can help.

How Lead Scoring Helps

Saving wasted time on dead end leads

One of the biggest points of contention in any business is between sales teams and management, and the need for more leads. The frontline reps always want more leads, and better leads. Management gets frustrated by the reams of leads not being worked or converted. Lead scoring can really help quantify this. It allows both sides to look at the numbers, be objective, and focus on solutions versus battling each other. When it turns out that a certain 20% of the database are D level leads, you are not going to be butting heads if they aren’t being worked so hard, and you’ll be glad your teams aren’t wasting time on redials that aren’t going anywhere.

Focusing labor on the most profitable leads

This simultaneously enables your teams to consciously focus 80% of their time, on the top 20% percent of leads. Once they are closed, they work on the next top 20, and so on. This also helps rank new leads as they come in, and delegate them to the best reps, or farm them out equally.

Gaining a better understanding of your customers

In this process you’ll also gain a far better understanding of your customers. It’ll help you relate better and create better solutions during sales conversations, and tailor information and sales funnels better from beginning to end, as well as in honing your front end ads.

Investing your budget for the best returns

When you know which leads are going to actually convert, and have your team spend their time on those, you create a lot of labor savings. These savings can either be used to invest more labor time in growing your sales, or on marketing that produces more A class leads. Infer’s calculator for predictive lead scoring projects that if you have 10 sales people making $55,000 per year, and a conservative 30% of their time is wasted on bad leads, you’d save $165,000 a year from lead scoring. You could use that to hire 3 more reps, or plow it into advertising to your best customers.

Avoiding staff burnout and turnover

Bad leads, and using poorly chosen metrics to push teams inevitably leads to burnout and high staff turnover levels. Many companies haven’t really done the math on what lack of engagement in the workplace, or turnover costs. The numbers are high, and it is draining on the whole company.

Better serving the most profitable leads

When your teams know who the best and most profitable leads are, they’ll make the effort to serve them better. There’s nothing worse than losing a great client or sale to the competition. Without the data you just really don’t know who those great leads are, not even by what they wear.

Not burning good leads that need time and nurturing

Some leads may not be ready to close this month. Yet, they may be ideal leads in the next 90 days or 12 months. You don’t want to burn these either. You don’t want to ignore them or push them too hard when they really aren’t ready. You just need to know what bucket to put them in.

Equipped with this knowledge businesses can pinpoint the optimal types of marketing and nurturing for each lead. For some that may be live outbound calls and sales emails. For others it may be drip campaigns, ringless voicemail drops or text messages. Or it could be more social media and blog content, or demos.

DNN Corp reports that using lead scoring and multi-channel marketing led to double and triple digit increases in website visitors, clicks, high quality leads, and conversions.

Creating additional revenue streams from D level leads

Too often D level leads are just buried, or hammered in the wrong way. Data has value, even if it isn’t on our ideal immediate sales prospects. Some organizations may be able to share or sell this data to others who it is a fit for, and recapitalize to put money into generating more A leads. Or it could be a matter of adding on new services to groom those D leads to becoming A leads. For example; providing credit repair to unqualified leads if you are a mortgage company. Then being able to capitalize on that relationship, and graduate them to sales once their credit is improved.

Then there is the ongoing, compounding benefit of adding all of these factors together.

The big question is; can you afford not to score your leads?

Yeah that’s one of those sayings you’re going to hear quite a lot if you stay in MLM circles for any time at all.  Most people just hear it and let it wash over them like water rolling off a ducks’ back.

If only they took it to heart and cracked open a book

What got me to thinking about books was a rare email from a guy I follow.  His name is Andre Chaperon and he’s a professional copywriter of quite some fame in Internet Marketing circles.  His email was talking about a blog post he just read by the very famous American author, Ryan Holiday.

Both Andre and Ryan (yeah like we’re on a first name basis) were talking about the value of buying books, reading and making notes when reading.   We are all bombarded by a jet stream of information on a constant basis now and it’s only going to get worse.  It’s never going to let up.  So how do we know which things to retain in our brain?

Well both these guys take notes.  Ryan has a whole paper system, with index cards and colored tabs.  Andre uses an app called Gingko

Andre mentioned how many books he purchased in the last year and Ryan touched on buying books as a tax deduction.  Both buy books as opposed to borrowing books.  The idea is to build your own library.  Something you can be proud of and go to anytime.

It’s not just some stupid saying that someone said to you.  It’s a real thing.  Anyone who has ever made it to the top is a reader.  If you’re not then you’re dooming yourself to failure.  That’s not me being rude and unkind to you, it’s just a fact.

While I was reading Ryans post I happened to wonder how many books I purchased this year.  I went to my Amazon Account and copied and pasted all the books.  I didn’t go and bother with the many Audible and Kindle versions I also purchased.

Some of these books I’ve read before.  I bought them again because I didn’t have them here in Cambodia.  When I buy anything form Amazon, I have to get it sent to a repackaging, freight forwarding company in Florida.  Then they ship it to me here in Phnom Penh.  It really adds a lot to the cost but it’s really the only sure way I can count on getting what I ordered.

MLM Training: The Biggest Mistake New Network Marketers Make

Don’t Let This Happen To You

I first got into MLM in 1992 when I was recruited into Amway. Seeing how the Amway business really worked as opposed to how I thought it worked was very interesting and exciting. This was my chance to get the hell out of debt and finally get the things I wanted in life.

One of the first things my new sponsor asked me to do was to make a list of everyone I know. All my friends, family and business associates. The idea was to make a big list and then call them up and go show them “the plan”. I did it, I made a big list.

I called people on the list and went and showed them the plan.

How do you think that worked out?

I was pretty good at showing the plan, I did it the same way my sponsor did and I used the same props as he used. I dressed the same, I did everything the same.

But the meetings did not go well. In fact, they always became very awkward. My friends would listen to me do the presentation for them and then politely (mostly) they would decline any further involvement. They didn’t want any more information and sure didn’t want me to ever raise the subject again.

Some even were quite rude and ridiculed me for my stupid choices and my desire to make a better life.

Now it needs to be remembered that none of these people were idiots nor were they bad.

So what was the problem, what was causing this reaction?

That’s exactly what happens when you first join an MLM business and you try to show the business to people who know you. You have no credibility with them, you are not rich, you have not built a business and they may have even seen you drunk at a party running around in your underwear.

Don’t let this happen to you, it’s a road to humiliation, sadness and quitting the business. Just as important is to make sure you do not let this happen to your new team members.

Teach them a great script and how to deliver it in a professional way. Show them how to handle objections and how to answer questions. Teach by showing. Demonstrate how to buy some leads. How to make calls to leads and how to do followups.

Starting An MLM Business Is Not Enough To Get Rich

Great words: Being broke is a temporary situation. Being poor is a state of mind.

I got the quote from an excellent site which teaches how to manage money and how to make money.

Let’s face it, many people join MLM because they are broke. We all know that. It’s sure why I first joined Amway back in 1992.

The problem is many people who join an MLM business don’t have any experience and often no concepts of how a business works.

Sadly they often think that just joining is enough to get rich.

It’s a foreign concept to them that they need to invest time and money to grow a business.

This is kind of understandable if their only real experience since leaving school is to be an employee. They know that if they turn up to work eventually they get paid.  So it’s off to work every morning and back home. No thought about the struggles to keep that business going. No thoughts about juggling the other creditors wanting to be paid, no thought about hiring and firing, no thoughts about trying to make the sales budget.

None of these things cross the employees mind while they sit in front of the TV waiting for the time to go to bed.

Starting and owning an MLM Business is much easier than starting a traditional business.  You can walk the path to success that others before you made.  All you need to do is Contact, Present, Recruit.  You don’t need to rent an office, hire staff, advertise and get loans from the bank.  You just need to stop procrastinating and take some action.


Be the leader

Part of your role as an upline is to not get frustrated by new people not understanding how business works.  Your job is to be a role model for them, to show them the way to build a business. (Yes you can be the leader, read this post )

And if you don’t know how, you need to look upline. You need to keep going upline until you find a leader who will show you the way.  Find an upline who is really crushing it and not just talking about it.  They will be the ones you see getting higher levels at functions, you will see them bringing lots of downline to events and you will probably see the company recognizing them in company magazines and websites.  That’s who you want to be learning from
